Extended reality (XR) headsets use display systems to warp how we view the world, from immersive VR devices that transport us to entirely new worlds, to AR glasses that seamlessly blend digital projections with our environment. Both types of headsets sometimes offer mesmerizing MR (Mixed Reality) encounters, where the line between real and virtual blurs, and digital elements seamlessly intermingle with our surroundings. In this journey, mastering display technology becomes the pivotal ingredient in crafting the "secret sauce" that distinguishes captivating headsets from relics of 1980s sci-fi.
Display technology requirements differ substantially between VR and AR devices, but change is constant for both. Apple's Vision Pro may hint at a coming shift toward OLED-on-Silicon displays in VR, yet supply hurdles loom. Meanwhile, AR embraces micro-LED displays, though they vie against contenders like LCoS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) and LBS (Laser Beam Scanning), and some believe progress is moving slower than expected.
Deciphering this display evolution becomes vital for grasping the XR landscape ahead. This webinar aims to do just that. Sam Dale, a Senior Technology Analyst at IDTechEx, will cover the following:
- An introduction to how XR device types affect display requirements
- Discussion of recent innovations in the XR display industry and their potential impacts on the future of XR devices
- The bottlenecks and technology gaps holding back XR display development, with potential solutions identified
- A roadmap for the development of the industry, with key player technologies highlighted
This webinar shares some of the research from the new IDTechEx report, "Displays for Virtual, Augmented and Mixed Reality 2024-2034: Forecasts, Technologies, Markets".
