Google Re-Enters the Smart Eyewear Market

Another Step Towards Consumer AR Smart Glasses: Google Re-enters the Market

This week, the long-anticipated announcement of Google smart eyewear came. It revealed intelligent eyewear with frames designed by Gentle Monster and Warby Parker, announced to be launched sometime in the autumn of 2026.

Google has been heavily involved in the extended reality (XR) market from the beginning. It released the Google Glass in 2013, before they were cancelled in 2015. It had since taken a step back from the hardware market, but developed AndroidXR, an open access software platform for XR devices. It built this platform alongside Qualcomm and Samsung, and this partnership was also key to the GalaxyXR virtual reality (VR) headset which was launched at the end of 2025. Google is now releasing audio-only smart glasses later this year.

Consumer issues with the Google Glass included price and privacy, and social acceptability of smart glasses is still a question to be answered in 2026. However, it is largely viewed as an exciting time for smart glasses, with a variety of big tech activities anticipated. Meta led the way with the launch of the Meta Ray-Ban range, followed by the launch of the Ray-Ban Display in September 2025. The Ray-Ban display are smart glasses which have augmented reality (AR) capabilities via a built-in transparent display into the eyepiece. Snap announced in October 2025 that it would be launching AR glasses in 2026, HTC are soon to launch display-less smart glasses, and Apple are also expected to join the market in the near future.

Google's latest smart glasses have several features, including a speaker and a camera, which enables interactions with Google's AI platform, Gemini. Collaboration with brands Warby Parker and Gentle Monster will make the glasses both fashionable and comfortable for an all-day wear replacement of regular eyewear. The glasses enable hands-free capabilities, for example, turn-by-turn navigation instructions, management of calls and texts on the move, speech and writing translation, capture of photos, the ability to order an Uber taxi, and other forms of assistance from Google Gemini. It remains to be seen whether use cases such as these can justify large-scale consumer adoption.

Google is also expected to launch smart glasses which include a display sometime in the future. These will notably be around a year or so behind the launch of the Meta Ray-Ban display. Google may be taking its time to get the launch right, having previously experienced the failure of the Google Glass in 2015. For smart glasses which will include the display there are still several questions. These glasses must include a light engine (projector and display hardware) within the frame and eyepieces. Can the technology enable lightweight, fashionable formfactors, which also provide an all-day battery life? Light leakage, also known as eye glow, can also reduce the social acceptability of these glasses. Furthermore, will AR display glasses have a compelling enough use-case to mitigate the additional bulk and cost compared to display-less smart glasses? There is also the question of whether privacy concerns surrounding all forms of smart glasses can be addressed.
